Volume III contains an index. The index shows there is no Sebastian and only one Bastian Klein and no other similar entry. There are 3 Lists for each ship. List A is the Captain's list. List B is the Oath of Allegiance. List C is the oath or Declaration of Fidelity and Abjuration. List A contains the phonetic spelling written by the captain or others. This list sometimes gives the ages. List B & C are the signatures of the men arriving.

Sworn that the above is a true and compleat list of Male Palatines imported in the Ship Robert and Allice of Dublin, of

Christian (P) Klein
[10th name on page 268 is:] Bastian Klein
38 out of 78 have signed with their mark indicating they can't write. Thus Bastian could write his name & Christian couldn't. The signature can be compared with his loose will in Raleigh NC to lend evidence that this immigrant is our ancestor.

[List 133 C] At the Court House at Philadelphia, Friday, the 15th Septr 1749.

The Foreigners whose Names are underwritten, imported
in the Ship Phoenix, John Mason, Master, from Rotterdam,
but last from Cowes in England, did this day take the usual
Qualifications to the government. By the List 261. 550 whole Freights from Zweybrech, Nassau, Wirtemberg, & Palatinate.

[55th person on this page is]
Moritz Klein
[56th person on this page is]
Jacob (X) Klein

406

[150th person on the list is:] Jacob Klein [Note that this Jacob can sign, unlike the one by Moritz. I wonder if they got separated and Moritz signed in for Jacob then Jacob signed in for himself when he got to the register, not knowing that Moritz had already signed for him. This won't float since the passenger talley is written in the record. Well, maybe they did not do a head count that day but rather a signature count. Yet it is hard to believe that since this is money he collects from passengers that he does not know exactly how many are on board independent of the lists. Unfortuneately, this ship does not have a list A or B.
