Did anyone catch Roy Underhill's "The
Woodwright's Shop" last night? He was in Alsace!!! He was in an outdoor
museum that has a number of different buildings brought in from other
areas of Alsace when their structure was in danger of destruction or
degradation from different causes. It was ABSOLUTELY fascinating! I
missed the first part of it (I believe). But he went into the various
styles of Timber Frame Houses and how different towns even had similar
colors or styles. He also showed how a tree was cut down into lumber
for the timber frame houses using multiple water-wheel driven straight
saws. Finally, he showed how a wheel-wright repairs/builds wheels.
Something I found even more impressive was that school children (May 7
or 8?) are brought to the town in groups to visit the museum FOR A WEEK
to learn about how their ancestors lived. He mentioned that many of
these children had never even seen a cow before they visited the
museum. I sure wish I had started with the very beginning of the
show...I don't know what I missed!!! They have tapes of the shows
available for $19.95.
