At about 12:30 AM this morning (18 Nov) I received the welcome from
maiser (our new listserver) saying I was subscribed which indicates we
now have a list for Killian. The Andreas Killian list
([email protected]) will no longer exists sometime in early 1997.
Since Sept 1996 I have not been able to log into it and change the forward.
That is because I did not pay the $18/year which caused them to change
the password blocking further use by anyone who did not pay. I therefore
cannot remove anyone from the old forward. To keep us from getting
duplicates of all email, by people sending to both addresses, I need
everyone to quickly subscribe to the new list. Anyone not subscribing
by Wednesday morning, I will subscribe. I want us to stop using the
old address on Wednesday. I want everyone to start writing to both
the new & old address immediately. That is, put both addresses on the
to-line of anything you want to address to us. Get yourself near the
top of the list by being 1st to subscribe. To subscribe, send email
to [email protected] and on the 1st line, type
subscribe KILLIAN
where your name is Sam X. Kent or Gerald R. Arfeld or whatever your name
is. Please include your middle initial (or if you go by your middle

Lorena, we Andreas Killians (of old Lincoln Co NC) are moving from a
pseudo list to a true list starting today, so I was looking thru old
email for people that had written wanting to be subscribed and I
found your letter. I do not recall answering it. Perhaps someone on
the pseudo list (nn110708) answered privately.
I am not sure what you mean by orgins. Do you mean Germany vs. Ireland?
If so, I will defend that we came from the German countries in 1732 on
the ship Adventure since the signature on the will of Andreas looks like
his signature on the passenger list.
If you mean the town, then I can say that Geo. W. Killian has a letter
from the archives in Konigsberg that states the names of the 3 children
of Andreas and they are girls & so Andreas is not the son of Johnannes
Philip Wolfgang Kilian. Besides Konigsberg is Catholic territory not
not the area from which the immigrants came. We do not know the town
that Andreas came from, tho there is at least one good prospect in the
IGI. I have stated this in my article on Andreas in Catawba County
Heritage. I will assume you have read that. If you want more info,
write us. Excuse any misspellings above.
If anyone wants to add to this note, please post a copy to Lorena, and
the pseudo & true list. Lorena, if you descend from Killian, then
please join our list. You might also tell of our email address and
web site in your book?

I think the welcome was a little harsh, but I did not want to make
waves. It is close to the way Larry Stephens provided it. I do hope
all will read it carefully as to how to use the listserver. However
in spite of what the welcome says about me running a "tight ship" as
far as what is posted, I have never felt inclined to fuss about what
was posted to one of my lists.
If you all have been writing the server for reviews, I am sure that
you noticed that it is not storing your name after your address. As
Harold Helm of the Ragsdale list told me, there seems to be only one
way to get parenthetical info after your name and that is for me (the
owner to unsub you & sub you with the desired info in parentheses.
As a result, you will be getting a message tonight that you have been
unsubed & then another copy of the welcome message. So, I need some

I talked to Jo-Ann Pedigo yesterday, and recommended she
get on the list. I think she knew before though. She is a descendant of
Leonard Killian, and I'm send her info.
For everyone elses info, I have George Killians data base now,
and am going through it. Just ask if ya have in questions, I'll send ya a

I have no idea how I ended up with both my addresses on the list.
The accs.net is having difficulties with their system and I can not always
get on. Then the holli.com line is usually busy "ALL" the time, so when I
get on there, I just get lucky.
About myself....I am Jo-Ann (with a capitol A) Pedigo (Killion).
My father is Stephen Killion, b. Aug 19, 1910 in Oden, In and his father (my
grandfather) is John N. Killion b. Nov. 26, 1846 in Daviess County....he was
married to the one you all have down as "Maggie"???? On the 1910
(Thirteenth census of the United States) he is listed as head of hold, with
a wife by the name of Mary, and four children...(1)Margarite being 16 and
single, (2)McKinley being 15 and single, (3) Halsie being 9 and single, and
(4) Thalma being 5 and single. This census was taken on April 18,
1910...therefore my grandmother was with child...my dad, born August 19,=
1910.
Now about those names =DC
(1)Margarite....did not get to know her.
(2)McKinley.....Named David McKinley married Myrtle E. Shepherd, Marguerite
Jennings, then Anetta ? He had children...my sister has this information.
(3)Halsie.......She was my dad's favorite sister and visited many times,
even spending the weekends with my parents, then later with us. She changed
her name, whether leagally or not, to Alice Rose Killion, she married
Marshall Downton, they had one son - John Marshall Downton...she then later
married William J. Kelly who was the president of the AFLCIO in Pittsburgh,
PA....they had no children. She was born on August 2, 1899 and swore she
was born in 1900, but her birth records say 1899. She was a very prim,
proper and proud lady. I miss her much. She died on March 19, 1986.
(4)Thelma Cordelia...only know that she was born Aug 27, 1904 in Daviess Co.
and died in 1939.
(5)Stephen....my dad....His birth records name him Stephen Wiley Killion
born on August 19, 1910....but he grew up thinking his name was Stephen
Edgar Killion born on August 18, 1910....Aunt Alcie said it was very late in
the night (early hours of the morning) when grandpa delivered him, and that
is probly why they celebrated on the 18th. He married Josephine Elizabeth
Warren on March 21, 1930 and they had four children...me being the youngest
(brat) =DC He died on Sept. 13, 1989.
John N. Killion became a doctor in 1899, I have a copy of his certificates=
(2).
My husband is Richard Pedigo and they think they are from
France....we are still working on his roots.
Well if there is anymore information you'd like, just ask and I will
help out.

If you have a big gedcom then let's use ftp & I will provide an anonymous
ftp site. Currently I have 2 anonymous ftp sites at ftp.genealogy.org
then are:
/pub/genealogy/surnames/RAGSDALE and
/pub/genealogy/surnames/MARJORIBANKS
Each has an incoming subdirectory.
If you want it shared with the world, let me know & I will move it up.
If you want it changed to web pages (using ged2html), let me know & I
will put it on the web.
If you are talking about a lineage, do not make it a file attachment.
Just paste it into a letter & email it to all on the list.
I think I will just let the late joiners of this list write the
listserver for the posts that we have been making to the new list.

Before I shut down for the evening, I wanted to let you all know I
have copies of the census records from Davies county on the Killion's from
1850 and form 1910. There are many Killions on these pages. If I can be of
help to you with them, let me know.
Also, I have heard that a Feast is still held in Germany in honor of
the Kilian family - does anyone have any information on this...I'd like to
go over there for the feast. There is a lady in Germany that I talk to on
the net, when I can find her, she is going to see if she can find anything
about it.

Gerald, I started to downloading IRC and stoped. Seemed it was taking
up too much room. I can talk. There are also chat rooms on the
internet. I do not know where. I could ask or maybe someone knows?
I cannot talk from Bigbird, but have 3 other accounts from which I
can talk. Who all has a talk daemon besides me? I think I can ytalk
from Tallahassee Freenet. That is a talk for groups. There are
chat rooms at AOL which I am on until about 28 Nov.
The feast is in honor of St. Kilian rather than our family, isn't it?

I have IRC, but don't use it because of the filthy language. Don't
know if you can talke "privately" with a group or not. I have found POWWOW
to be a good place for "conferences" because you can block evevyone else
out. However, you can only get 7 screens at the same time up. So, if there
were more than 7 of us, it would not work. It is instant chat, you can see
the others typing there messages - as they are typing it. It also has voice
and you can talk to another person. If interested, it's a free download, at
http://www.tribal.com You also have to have an unzip program to unzip it,
and it is availabe at that site too. I have had POWWOW for several months
now, and like it real well. If you decide to use IRC, let me know about a
day ahead of time, so I can get one of my boys to show me how to use it, as
I always go to parentsplace.com and POWWOW.

As it was brought to my attention, there are a few problems using IRC. But
there are also several new IRC Nets available, I was thinking of using one
of the smaller ones, less traffic.
A private channel can be set up, making it invite only, and will be able
to control who and what goes on. As long as we stay away from UnderNet and
EFNet, we shouldn't have any problem.
But also, if not many of you use IRC, be alot tougher to set up, though I
could probable just e-mail anyone interested a copy of mIRC that would be
configured as much as possible.

I am interested in using PowWow or downloading something, but Gerald,
do not email me the software. I don't have Eudora and file attachments
are imbedded in with the message and I do not know where to cut the
attachment out & even if I did, I do not have the software to uncompress
it. You may ftp it to one of my anonymous ftp sites or tell me the
site to get it from by ftp. Let me know if you want the host &
path to my anonymous ftp site. BTW, everyone read in the welcome
message where Stephens said that we are not to send file attachments
to the list. I do not know why he said that other than that some
cannot read file attachments, but suppose he does not want such
big files in our archives on his machine, taking up space. He said
his machine ran out of space last night and some lists were lost.
PowWow sounds interesting because it lets me use my mic which I have
never used. I will probably need guidance. I have pkunzip to unzip
PowWow if that is the unzip program that is required. I can put
it on my ftp site if anyone needs it.

As to web pages, I have made some changes. I hope you all like them.
I will begin to work on the lineages file next and start looking for

I think Kent was going to scan newsletters & maybe the signature of
Andreas Kilian. Gerald, you said you might put up an abbreviated
gedcom. I guess you mean, make PAF make a gedcom of the 1st 4 generations
or 6 down from Andreas then turn that to web pages with ged2html?
I don't like where Geo. put the church, hospital, cemetery, etc. in
the last field where country goes. Is that how his data still is?
Yet, he is doing the input. I think he will make corrections to his
database (but not move cemetery to field 1). Is that your plan -- to
send him corrections then get a new database? I can't see one having
to make the same corrections everytime one gets a new database from
Geo. Except I might remove Konigsburg from being Andreas' birthplace
and remove Andreas' parents' link to Andreas if Geo. can't be convenced.
I wish I could find my copy of the letter Geo. gave me that he received
from Konigsburg that disproved Andreas' connection to said town & people.
Anyone could write Konigsburg and ask for the children of Johannes Philip
Wolfgang Kilian. BTW, you know Andreas spelled it with one l as is
still done in Germany. As to Mathias & Henrich being Andreas' brothers,
there is nothing to substantiate that nor did Andreas name kids Matthew
or Henry. I do not think Andreas had brother come to America, let
alone on the same ship. Now have I answered everything? Check out

The correction I have to send him is on the info I gave him, he typed
it all in by hand, and has some typos, and I think he missed a few things,
still
have to go through it when I get the time.
With Family Tree Maker, I can put a web page up at their sight for a
year. Will probably do that, and have probably have 5 generations. The thing
just grows so fast right after that. Will also put it on my sight, again 5
generations. They will be in 2 different formats, and hopefully make it
available
to more people, and maybe find more relatives.

I will be happy to add your Killian mailing list to the file, including the
address of the web pages. It may take a day or two so please be patient :) I
don't think the date of founding is necessary ... most of the surname mailing
lists on the rmgate server are rather new and I believe that everyone
recognizes this.
Good luck with the list ... I am sure the number of subscribers will grow by
leaps and bounds!!

Yes, I wish he would import the data or at least that is what I'd do, but
I guess some people put in sloppy info, yet he could run PAF's checking
program to check for bad links & unusual or impossible data and get the
data straight by snailing the sender about the anomolies & getting a
revised gedcom from the sender. He is a Mormon, but I don't think he
uses thetheir program to its fullest. I guess "beggers (like me) can be
choosers". BTW, I am nominally a Baptist. You all'll have to pray for
me. :)
I published the descendants of my Gt.Grandfather Killian in Catawba Co.
Heritage in about 9 articles then got the reunion to buy Geo. a book
hoping he'd pull all the Killian data out of the book. I do not think
he did. I did not check his PAF data to see if he typed it in correctly.
I guess I have too much faith. :) or am too lazy. Glad you have the
energy to check what he did.

What are the formats? Gedcom & ged2html output pages? When you get
Geo.'s data on the web, we Killians will be looking impressive.

I'll go through it, and fix what I can, but will take quite awhile. Though
all programs are suppose to ex/inport GEDCOM, some do it better than others.
He had to type my data in, FTM export doesn't like to work right. Something to
do with changes to the standard, and how fast and loose some programers are
with the standard.

Links will be fine. Just hope I have enough harddrive room for what I want
to do, will have to see.

I'll use GED2HTML on my web sight, the other sight will be in a report
format. Will see how it comes out.

Get us all linked together and will also save us some time and harddrive space
at web sights. I'm at my limit now, 5 Megs with the way I have the one page set

The reason, is that I never get around to answering all my email.
I don't even finish reading it all. Besides you ask about Leonard
and the only documentation (primary source info) I have on him
is I've seen his tombstone at St. Paul's. I am not sure I have
even photographed his stone, so don't have any documentation.
If I had a photo of the stone, I'd call that documentation & pretty
primary. Some might say that a stone is not a primary source
but I think it is contemporary enough to the event to be called
primary. I have Wilfong's book of transcriptions of the cemetery.
I guess that is secondary. Yes, I wish we had Bibles for all. I
don't have any Bibles until I get down to Sidney Killian my gt.
grandfather. He was son of Elijah, son of Joseph, son of Sam,
son of Andreas. So I have just named 4 Bibles in my direct line
that are lost. So write us. Some of us descend from Leonard
& will be more likely to have Leonard's stuff than me. I am
just Leonard's nephew (w/lots of greats). You do not have
to be subscribed to write us. Just tell us you are not subed
when you write & then the responder can address the letter
to you with a cc to us. At least that's my advice.

I think all the Killian place names are in Germany -- none in Alsace, Lorraine,
Switz., Austria, or Poland, so I'd think we are from within the bounds of
modern Germany. Now that I think of it, that is not fair. I checked the
CIA gazeteer from WWII of E. & W. Germany. I am not sure it included
Prussia (which is in part in Poland) or Austria nor Switzerland and maybe
not A-L. Well we agree, "not Ireland".

Where is RW? About the only documents I have photocopies of are
Andreas' will, Sam's marriage bond, I guess only film remains in
Catawba Co and the originals are in Raleigh?

I know it is an uphill battle to get non-genealogist to forsake a conclusion
that has been put in print, like Geo. Killian's paragraphs:
A33 The three children by his [Johannes Philip Wolfgang Kilian]
last wife [Anna Dorthea Warnberger] are not given by actual name
in the story in Germany; it is extremely likely that these child-
ren are:
A34 Matheus Kilian, Heinrich Kilian, and Andreas Kilian, all of
whom migrated to Pennsylvania in 1740, 1730, and 1732, respectively.

Thanks. I really appreciate the info. We also need a message to

This is what I did with what Leah Savage posted to us. It has lots of
stuff we need to talk about. I think I have seen "Rhenish,Palatinate,
Germany" in Geo.W. Killian's data. Is that where it came from?
PAF limits one to 16 characters per field, so if one wants to enter
the modern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, I can see people using the
town & county field, but don't like that. I am so full of opinions.
How about someone else tell us about Rhineland, Palatinate and merging

a county Palatine. Can someone explain that? I think Germany

us, and they are not familiar with PAF, they will think us idiots
if we put "Rhenish,Palatinate,Germany", don't you all think?
I'd like to see us standardize the entry for Andreas.

Co. I do not know if the above is perfect with the stone. You all with
photos, tell us. You all that know, tell us why the "."s are where they
are and about the spelling & meaning of all the words & suffixes. I am
very jealous of you Leonardites. My Samuel is far younger & has no stone!
:-( Leonard was wealthier than the other children. Is that because of
primogeniture? Or did he not lose all the land that Andreas lost before
the Indians forced them off Killian's Creek (in present Lincoln Co)?
What is the German naming pattern? Should Andreas's father be Leonard
or is Leonard's mom's father Leonard? If we call Andreas, Andreas, then
should we call Leonard, Leonhard? Is that correct modern German spelling?
Is the stone cutter not fully literate or is this a dialectical spelling.
(My spelling shows I am not fully litterate.) Is everything on the
stone spelled in modern German? I hear PA German is a little different
than modern German? How & why? Regional or not codified by a dictionary
till later?

My information came from George Killian and _The History of the
Killian Family in North Carolina_.
The (Killian) does refer to her married name, not maiden name. I
have meant to remove such notations from my database, but just
haven't gotten around to it yet.
Listing Mary as the mother of Leonard is a mistake on my part. I
wasn't paying attention when I was putting the information in.
The "Rhenish, Palatinate, Germany" was from George W. Killian's
information. What would be a more correct way of putting it? I
really don't know.
One more question. Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth
Fulbright, wife of Mathias?

George has Koenigsberg, Germany. I don't even like using
Germany in that time frame since it didn't even excist then. Since I
have done little research myself, and think it would probably be years
before I ever get a chance to get to NC to look around, I'm pretty much
at the mercy of who sends me info.
What I could use is a set of historical maps of central Europe.
I have other parts of mylines from there also, and it'll help.

About, before or after, what ever we know for sure. Alot depends
on our own personal system for keeping track of things.

I think I'm gonna limit myself to the government census dates, and
then just add names to me. Someone may get bent if there birthday is on-
line.
What I hope someone in the NC area can do, is get some pictures
on-line, or make them available to us long distance researchers. I'll settle
for
scanned pics, will pay for copies, whatever. Would like pictures of grave
markers, and the region in general.
Also think we should stay in touch with a few of the historical
societies. Perry Co Missouri has been a great help to me, and Killians and
members of both Hager lines went to that region also.
I'm also open to most any suggestion.

Yeah, I have heard that. What was there? Holy Roman Empire?
Looking at the historical maps in the back of Hammond's atlas,
H-24 Europe in 1559
Holy Roman Empire covers Netherland (which includes what is now
Belgium & Luxemburg, Franche Comte, Savoy, Papal States, Swiss Confed.,
Austria, and Bohemia and Moravia, Silesia but not Slovakia nor Rep.
of Venice.
H-25 Europe in 1648 at Peace of Westphalia
The word Holy is omitted.
The Empire includes same as above except Switz.,Savoy,D.of Milan,
and other Italian states down to the Papal States.
H-26 Europe in 1713-1714 at Treaties of Utrecht & Rastatt
Called merely the Empire, it includes the above except:
the Netherlands gets free (Belgium & Lux. remain in the Empire),
Alsace is lost to France or most of it is. A part of Lorraine
remains in the Empire & the rest falls to France.
I guess that is the map (situation Andreas knew).
H-27 Europe in 1763
Holy Roman Empire
Includes all of the above except all of Alsace & Lorraine are lost
to France.
So even with all the losses, Germany was still far larger than it
is today since it had Belgium, Lux., Austria, most of the Polish
coast, Silesia (which is now the Oder valley of SE Poland, Tyrol
which is partially in Italy & partly in Austria, a corner of
Yugoslava. I guess WWI & WWII make sense to Germany considering
their loses.
If you all cannot visualize the bounds of these places, then
IMHO, you need an atlas or to look at the one you have. I
recommend a big Hammond atlas. It may cost $50. Make sure it
has historical maps of the world in the back, not just historical
maps of the US. What do others think of my suggestion or other
atlases?
Now you all should get on my case & tell me to read up on the
Holy Roman Empire in Britannica. I understand it was weak. I
realize I am looking at lines on a map and need to understand
how real or important the lines were.

Charles Hall, founder wrote genealogical atlases of each German
speaking country's states. I sure would like to link to some nice
maps.

About the tombstone inscription -- I make it as far as "here lies the son of
Abraham" and peter out there. I've sent the text to my brother, who's
pretty fluent in German, to see if he can figure out the rest.
Here's my Killian line as far as I know it; all these folks are from
Frederick County, MD:
Philip Killian, 1814-1882, m. Anna Eliza Hooper in 1839.
According to a census record, Philip's father was supposedly born in
Prussia. He may be the son of Philip Killian and Elizabeth Dertzbaugh (m
1808), but I don't have any real supporting evidence yet.
Philip and Anna had nine children, amongst whom was John Edward Killian,
1844-1914. John married Lucy Grosh, the widow of Herman F. Debring, around
1877. Their daughter, Lucy Emma Virginia Killian, 1878-1962, was my
great-grandmother; she married James Hamner Davis around 1907.

My history is a bit rusty, but Germany wasn't a contry until 1871.
Before, it was a group of independant states and cities. And quite the mess
to try and keep track of.

I hope to have a scanner soon, they are still coming down in price,
and would be nice to have pictures to go with some of these places. Scanned
source documents will also be a great help, instead of relying on the US mail.
Also in the techno thread, how many of us own ZIP drives? When I
imported Georges database into Family Tree Maker, the file is 15 Megs in size.
If I ever decide to add any pics, the size will take off. And I learned earlier
this
week it cost about $1.00 to mail a ZIP disk, so it's another way to get large
amounts of data moved around.

My thinking was to work together with them. For example, I was
called the beginning of the week by a new relative. She got my phone
number from Gerald Schmidt, a member of the Perry Co, Historical Society.
Gerald Schmidt is descended from Wilhelm Hager who's daughter Barbara
married Samuel.
Problem is I know of no one in Perry Co on the internet who is related
in anyway. Maybe I can find someone soon. Perry County Historical Society
has been very helpful to me. They are responsible for me getting as far as fast
as I have. All by getting me in contact with other related researchers.
We let the related counties know about us, how to get a hold of us, and
share information. Just an idea.
