A List of Children of Settlers of German Descent in Central North Carolina, 1783 1792
By Anne W McAllister* and James W Miller, Jr.

[Editor's Introduction: In November, 1982, on pages 194 198, the Journel published Ute-Ingrid Seidler's "A List of Children of Settlers of German Descent in Central North Carolina, 1775 1791".  Since that time additional pages of Pastor ARNDT's register have been located, and the names from them appear below.]

The Rev. Johann Gottfried ARENDS (John Godfrey ARNDT) was born on 11 December 1740 in Gottingen, Germany, and he was graduated from the Teachers Seminary in Hanover.  He came to America in 1772 and, finding a shortage of ministers, he was ordained at the Organ Lutheran Church in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1774.  He served churches in the area now Cabarrus, Davidson, Guilford, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, and Stokes counties.

After his marriage to Hannah RUDISILL, ARENDS (ARNDT) moved his home from Rowan County to Lincoln County.  He established many Lutheran churches in western North Carolina and served as a minister until blindness handicapped his last years.  He died on 9 July 1807 and was buried in the Old White Church in Lincolnton, North Carolina.

This pioneer Lutheran minister's confirmation lists of teenaged children were kept in German in his Register, now preserved in the Archives of the North Carolina Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, Salisbury, North Carolina.

Who are these 4 KILIANs' parents & grandparents?
I, the webmaster, removed the given names of non-Kilians in order to:
1) emphasize & study the Kilians &
2) to not use the whole document (in keeping with fair usuage).

Saturday 3 Aug 2002 at my request Robyn Putnam [email protected] sent the whole article, including given names.  Thanks.
