How to Subscribe to & Unsubscribe from
the List for all interested in the surname Killian of any spelling
It costs nothing to subscribe or to be a subscriber. It is for posting
genealogical queries about KILLIANs of any spelling. There are 2 types of
subscriptions. If you want to receive the posts individually as they are
sent to the list, then subscribe to "mail mode". It you want the posts
gathered up by the server & mailed to you as a group when the server has
collected 32,768* bytes to send or 18* hours have passed since the last
digest was sent (which ever happens first), then subscribe to "digest
mode". The only difference in how to subscribe one way vs. the other is
which server you write to & get your address added to -- the D or the L
server. If you look carefully below you will see that to subscribe in
mail mode the subscribe message is sent to Killian-L-Request & to subscribe
in digest mode the subscribe message is sent to Killian-D-Request. Thus
notice that we have 2 servers & 2 lists, but the D list is subscribed to
the L list & vice versa so anything sent to either list is received by all
addresses subscribed to the L & the D lists.
If this web page does not make sense, slow down and read it again slower,
out loud, & more carefully & read what is below & think about how it might
work, as you read. Try it out & eventually this will become clear. You
can even subscribe to both modes at once, though you won't want to do that
for long, because it is boring to get 2 copies of every post.
* The value 32,768 bytes & 18 hours is from the rc.custom
file (that the Killian-D server software uses under the UNIX operating
system), which I James Green (listowner) ordered today 14 July 1999 from
RootsWeb's maintainer's page for the Killian List & which the Killian-D
server sent to me in email the same day. Not everything works in software,
so one can be misled. These values may not control when digests are sent,
but they are my best guess. I (the listowner) am not subed in digest mode
so have no knowledge of when digests are sent, besides RootsWeb has been
known to get backlogged, so you cannot tell what is supposed to happen,
you can only tell what happens. (grin)

How to get the list of who is currently subscribed
People used to be able to write to the listserver & get the list of
subscribers, but that no longer works. RootsWeb's server got messed up
sometime between April & Dec. 1998 (I think), and the dist file stopped
being updated. Shortly after the RootsWeb staff closed the lists in mid
Dec. 1998, it was realized that the old dist files were controling who
could post, so the dist files were removed for all lists at RootsWeb. Now,
only the listowner can get the list of addresses that are subscribed. I
think it is important for the subscribers to know what addresses are
subscribed to the list so they can check about how long they have been
subed & who is subed, so they do not send a post to the list & them, so
that the receiver does not get 2 copies. Potential Subscribers need to see
how many are subscribed to see that subscribing and posting are worthwhile.
Subscribers need to know how many are subed in order to get the feel for
how many they are reaching with a post & to see it is worthwhile to post.
So to aid in this I have put the subscriber lists at:
