It is being spammed.
The method used to count emails with RootsWeb's search engine, was to search for "Date:" which should be in all emails. The method used to find the earliest email in a year was to look for Jan and if none, look for Feb and if none then Mar, etc. Once I found emails of a month, I looked to see which had the earliest date.

OneList/eGroups has the number of emails per month in a table of months. I just added up each month's emails to get the yearly total. I took the founding date as the date of the 1st email, thinking I'd have to join the list to actually see the emails & their dates.
