How to get & search the posts to the new List
for those interested in the surname Killian of any spelling

  1. Each of our servers (Killian-L-Request & Killian-D-Request) has its own archives. Currently the only files in our 2 servers' archives are our postings to the list. Killian-L's archives has files made up of individual letters (let's call them individual files) that we have posted to the list. Killian-D's archives has files made up of all the letters we posted in a single day (let's call them daily files). So we write to Killian-L-Request to get an individual file & we write to Killian-D-Request to get a daily file. The 1st step (in either case) is to get the file list from the appropriate server & the 2nd step is to get a file or more that is listed on the file list.
    1. for individual files
      1. write for a file list:
        1. write a letter to [email protected] and
        2. In the subject type
          archive
        3. In the body of the letter type
          dir latest
        4. mail your letter & the server will send you the file list that looks like this:
        ls -l latest

        1. write a letter to [email protected] and

        4. mail your letter & the server will send you that file (i.e. letter).
Perhaps the other columns are not important, but the size of the file (i.e. letter) in characters (bytes) is in the 4th of the 7 columns. The 5th & 6th columns give the date & time of the file (i.e. letter). The 1st column is the read (r), write (w), & execute (x), protection of each file (letter). Note that the files (letters) are in alphabetical order (not numeric order) according to file number,

      2. To get one of the above files (which are daily files of all posts for each day), e.g. the file for May 30, which is file #2 (Note the file numbers are in the rightmost column):
        1. write a letter to [email protected] and
        2. In the subject type archive
        3. In the body of the letter type get volume97/20
        4. mail your letter & the server will send you that file (i.e. all posts that were posted to the list on May 30).
Perhaps the other columns are not important, but the size of the file (i.e. letter) in characters (bytes) is in the 4th of the 7 columns. The 5th & 6th columns give the date & time of the file (i.e. letter). The 1st column is the read (r), write (w), & execute (x), protection of each file. Note that the files are ordered on file number, but are alphabetized rather than being in numeric order (i.e. "1" is followed by "10" rather than by "2").

  2. You can search our archives for a string of characters finding the files (if any) in which the string occurs.
    1. for individual files
      1. search the archives:
        1. write a letter to [email protected]
        2. In the subject type
          archive
        3. In the body of the letter type
          search string latest/*
where "string" is the string of characters you seek. For example, if you want to know what letters contain the word Daniel, then type in the body: search Daniel latest/*
        4. mail your letter & the server will send you output that looks like this:
        search Daniel latest/*
        BEGIN---------------cut here------------------
        latest/45:21:Daniel Killian b.1790 NC. d. 1876 Dekalb Co. Alabama ...

latest/46:41:her line have stayed in the Asheville area since Daniel

The above output shows that Daniel occurs thrice in individual file #45, namely on lines 21, 24, & 26 and also twice in file #46, namely on lines 40 & 41.
      2. To get the letter, follow the instructions in I.A.2.
    2. for daily files
      1. search the archives:
        1. write a letter to [email protected]
        2. In the subject type archive
        3. In the body of the letter type
          search string volume97/*
where "string" is the string of characters you seek. For example, if you want to know what files contain the word Daniel, then type in the body: search Daniel volume97/*
        4. mail your letter & the server will send you output that looks like this:
          search Daniel volume97/*
        BEGIN---------------cut here------------------
